The Death Spiral – Hands-On Preview | Cyber-Mythology Action Roguelike

Following the initial reveal of "Loulan: Sands of Ruin" last October, Chillyroom today unveiled a work significantly different from their previous titles—"ReBlade: The Death Spiral."

At first glance, the title gives little hint of what the game is about. According to the developer, it's a "cyber-mythology action game."

Judging from the trailer, the game adopts a predominantly sci-fi industrial aesthetic, blended with elements of traditional Chinese architecture and patterns. Set against neon lights and an endless night, it exudes a distinct "Chinese cyberpunk" vibe.

Based on the current description on its Steam page, players will take on the role of a "synthetic human" marked for disposal. Through cyclical combat, they will combine, evolve, and battle mechanical demons to gradually uncover the truth behind the world.

The PV also showcased numerous enemy and creature designs. Aside from robotic minions, enemies resembling Terracotta Warriors appear, while regional bosses seem like mythical beasts that have undergone a "mechanical ascension." For instance, the mythical beast Qiongqi is depicted with mechanical skeletal wings and metallic armor.

Beyond the art style, another highlight of the PV is the combat presentation. During the "First Look" event on Bilibili, we had hands-on experience with "ReBlade: The Death Spiral." Overall, the combat leans toward fast-paced and direct action, emphasizing visceral satisfaction. It requires players to frequently engage in parrying, dodging, and countering maneuvers.

This may sound demanding, but the game incorporates roguelike mechanics, which somewhat alleviates the pressure of high execution barriers. Even if players fail in a run, they can gradually enhance their base stats and starting gear through repeated attempts.

In the current offline test version, before entering a level, players can choose from various starting weapons, including daggers, shield-axes, and longswords.

The PV also revealed weapons like double-ended spears and greatswords. Each playthrough features randomly generated map layouts, though they are composed of fixed-level types such as regional bosses, stage-end bosses, safe zones, resource levels, and shops. Players can opt for a steady approach, gathering resources, upgrading equipment, and boosting abilities, or they can directly challenge the stage-end boss from the start.

Notably, the weapon system in "ReBlade: The Death Spiral" offers considerable flexibility. Each weapon comes with different attribute modifiers.

When players obtain new weapons by defeating enemies or discovering them in chests, they can either replace their current weapon outright or transfer modifiers between old and new gear, allowing for customization that suits their playstyle.

In combat, each weapon features only one primary and one secondary skill. Rather than relying on frequent attacks or skill spamming, the core mechanic encourages players to "parry" enemy assaults.

When deflecting sustained barrage-like attacks, the rhythmic clang of metal-on-metal impacts during successive parries adds a sense of tempo and exhilaration to the combat. Additionally, certain projectile attacks can be parried and kicked back, turning them into offensive opportunities.

In boss battles, parrying is also essential for breaking shields.

Parrying demands intense focus and precise timing, which can translate to high execution pressure.

However, in the simple mode of the hands-on demo, it was evident that the game offers a relatively lenient parry window, lowering the barrier to entry. This allows players to gradually familiarize themselves with and adapt to the combat flow through trial and error.

Overall, based on the current hands-on experience, "ReBlade: The Death Spiral" has established a relatively clear framework for its combat system. Moving forward, the game's success will depend on further refinement of its pacing, progression curve, and gameplay depth, which remains to be seen in future updates.

The game's unique cyber-mythology world offers vast imaginative potential. How this "uniqueness" unfolds across the full experience and combat scenarios will likely be revealed in the next chapter of its development.
